I'm always wanted to do a hack of pokemon FireRed with 151 of my own original pokemon.

I was wondering if FireRed would be the best Rom to hack, its the gen I know most and the 151 seems like reasonable number to create but I was wondering if the hacking community had already moved onto the later generations by now.

pic related is a few very rough sketches, just raw ideas

Does anyone know the best way to set out a pokedex?

starters/birds/bugs first and legendaries last, but what about the middle?

I dunno. The Kanto Dex had it all over the place while the Unova Dex ordered it based on where they can be found in the game.

Gen 3 is still very popular for hacks and the best one to go with. FireRed has patches for physical/special split and fairy-type too, which is a bonus.

Nice Gen 1 esque pokemon, dude.

Gen 3 Rom hacking is arguably the most developed as far as available tools and research go (though nothing beats a good ASM coder), Fire Red being the focal point of Gen 3 of course. I would say that people are definitely still making hacks for Fire Red, as for actual research into code or making tools though? ehhh.... you could definitely find help pretty easily though, help in the sense of "I'm not sure how to proceed" not help as far as "Will you guys help me do it?"

Anyway, short answer being yea, Fire Red is probably your best bet.

Liking that peacock too...

not yet, very early stages now. I thought about it a couple of months ago but need to refresh my memory.

I do remember an exe. that lets someone export a sprite then import it.

Why limit yourself to Firered's awful engine? Like I simply don't get why go through all the hoops to limit yourself.

Are you suggesting RPGMaker?
Firered may not be capable of everything you want (if you don't know ASM that is), but is arguably better for gameplay experience. RMXP just plays sluggish in my experience and doesn't have the same feel as the original Pokemon games had.
With Firered (or any gen 3 games for that matter) you can play on your phone, and speed up the gameplay so you don't have to sit through a simple battle that would last 5+ minutes in RMXP.

While that would still be limiting yourself. Anything better than limiting yourself to the Firered engine.
There's technically nothing wrong with RPGmaker. If it 'doesn't have the feel' it's your own skills.

Actually, they're hacking even Gen 6 by now. You have to be some sort of coding genius to change certain aspects, but there are ways to disassemble the entire game and reassemble it again. Also, the 3DS emulator can now play XY without a problem.
