You're going by the anime, but Ash is essentially a fill-in for Red, Gold, Brendan, Lucas etc, who are still the main characters.

Because May, Dawn, Serena etc exist in the anime canon, doesn't make them the game canon characters.

I based it off a combination of overall aesthetics and how much they fit the bill for an actual Pokemon trainer who is going to spend months at a time outdoors/on foot. I give Nate and Rosa a slight pass since their tights are likely wet suits since Dive returned and visors were made for more sporty looks which is what they have going. Rosa has like half of a wet suit and a bikini top which is a little silly since Nate has a full wet suit but it's hot so I don't think too much about it.

We only know of one canon protag, and that's Red. We don't know of any canon starter.

Personally, I think Brendan is Hoenn's protag because he looks more like Norman. And I take Nate as BW2's protag because of the short. Now, usually anime is an entirely different canon and I don't use it as proof, but that short was game promotion/ad, so I believe it's gonna be as close to proof as we can get.

No, you idiot. He didn't have a name at all. Gold was a filler name just like Silver was. You got Silver as protag name if you bought the Silver cart.

Same for the other two. The rival still doesn't have an official name to this day, and the girl is argueable. Not name in the originals, but the English version wrote her as Crystal on the back of the box.
