For those people who have no interest in Pokemon competitively what's your biggest draw to playing the games?
I always liked raising Pokemon for the sake of it. Just seeing them grow from level 1, learning more powerful moves and evolving. Features that increase immersion like Pokemon following you around and Amie are big pluses for me.

The greed and the fact that I'm collecting stuff and I don't have any other collecting hobbies. And the girls. Funny enough, Pokémon is the only RPG I like. My taste more swings to the combat simulator games, like red orchestra and insurgency, but also stuff like IL-2 and war thunder. I am a blatant /k/ommando.

Basically what you said, raising the mon, forming a bond with it. Amie is really fun, especially with mons that will do cute shit like high-five you.

And maybe it's just my nostalgia of playing the first games, but there's a sense of adventure when going through the game, at least for the first time. Never knowing what kind of mons I'll see, being just a bit too unprepared for those surprise rival battles.

Sure other games like The Elder Scrolls or Fallout or even Grand Theft Auto are more expansive and tell better stories, but none of them make me excited to go out into their world. There's something about Pokémon that just makes it seem genuine in a way no other game really can for me. Keep in mind, I'm in no way saying these games are pieces of art, far from it. They have many problems, but still manage to be fun.

I just enjoy building different teams and training I haven't trained before.

Some part of me just seeks the noltagic feeling of playing Silver when I was a youngin'. Contests in Gen IV and III are also sort of fun and sometimes I breed Pokemon just for the hell of it and that's fun too.

Granted, I started playing competitively with gen VI but I suck horribly without good IV's and I don't care enough to put in the effort.

Immersion is a state of mind, and part of that is believing what you're playing is more than just a game. We had vivid imaginations as children, and the idea of adventure was associated only with fun and exploration free of real world danger and stress. If we never played these as children that magic may of never happened.

Pretty much this. This is why Gen V worked so well, discovering the newly designed mons was refreshing. Catching and battling was a bit of a challenge too. Personally I thought the story was really interesting and investing.

I never played competitively due to lack of friends. I only got to replay HeartGold since this last week while I didn't come on /vp/ in years. I like to collect a bit and battle NPC but I don't feel like I'd be good at playing competitively, seem to much of a hassle to EV train which I never bothered to do.

I've been playing since Red.

I remember watching the first few episodes of the anime after hearing about the seizure incident, but ended up actually liking it.

A few weeks later, I was sitting in math class bored, and it occurred to me how much I liked the world and concept and wanted to take part in it, so when my next report card came my mom got me Red, the ONLY original GameBoy game I had brand new.

Even though the games arent as ambitious as I'd like, and the TV series feels like an extended exercise in disguising filler as content...

The optimism and lighthearted adventure of the Pokémon world in spite of their being challenges to overcome and evil to stop capture my spirit, especially with the heavy focus on bonding with Pokemon and other Trainers as friends and partners.

So the thought of that world and its creatures has been a little light in my heart as times have gotten increasingly rougher, and I imagine that if other worlds like the Pokémon world do exist, then ours must be at least as strange and wonderful as any other, so I'm driven to find the magic and wonder in my own world and appreciate this brief chance to experience as much of it as I can.

And also, a DS or 3DS with Pokémon in the cart slot has been with me through many many hours of me sitting with my mother in emergency rooms and in hospital rooms while bad things are happening.

From the 20th of the hospital where my mom was often treated, I remember often lowering my DS/3DS and looking out the window and imagining flying away on a Flygon.

Its pretty much single handedly kept me from turning to hard drugs.
