There's a theory out there that Chimecho and Chingling were both supposed to be gen 3 but they weren't ready, but at the last second Gamefreak put Chimecho alone into the game. Apparently its listed last in the code or something, and it explains why its so obscure/almost no NPCs have it. Why its so shit is beyond me though

Chimecho was easily my best Pokemon in my Emerald replay, it destroyed everything it came across and was the only reason I beat Wallace. A Calm Mind or two and it would OHKO pretty much everything with Psychic and Shock Wave.

I was really surprised at how useful he ended up being, I was only using him because I hadn't before and I like its design.

Driftveil City is right there, so it's pretty easy to get Signal Beam onto it. And with Volcarona's ridiculously high Special Attack, even Ember and Fire Spin hit appreciably hard at that stage in the game.

Murkrokw Misdrevous, Sneasel (outside of Crystal), Houndour, Porygon 2, qwilfish, etc.

And even with some Johtomons actually in johto, they were still retardely rare to obtain such as Marill, Snubble, Yanma, etc. As rare as they were, they were complete ass competitively and ingame.

probablt because Noibat's stats are godawful and it also evolves at level 48, those stats would quickly fall out of line after the 2nd gym.and you'd have a very bad time waiting until level 48 for the thing to evolve.

At least in XY the moment you catch it is the moment you can evolve it.

I think what they were going for in Gen II was some level of consistency with the idea that only a few years earlier (in RBY) Oak had said there was only 150 species. So a lot of the new ones were supposed to be rare and hard to discover.

Is Mt Silver technically in Johto or Kanto? Because Larvitar's in there.

Thankfully both those got a little better in gen 4, you can get a Bullet Seed TM for Hoppip, and the Togepi egg has Extrasensory, which is godly with Serene Grace, and very powerful that early on.

Gyarados it's spotted.
But Arcanine has 100 SpA and Tyranitar 95. Even until Gen V that was still usable.
Also Tyranitar learns, as a Larvitar, Rock Slide in level 22 in GSC itself.
Gyarados got the short end until ADV and Arcanine always was mediocre at best.

Grass is a weird defensive type. Sure, it's got five weaknesses, but two of them are lolPoison and kekBug. Meanwhile, you have those delicious Ground and Water resists that no team can do without. Pair that with near-automatic access to cool shit like Leech Seed, Synthesis, and Giga Drain, and Grass-types have a habit of sticking around longer than the numbers alone would have you believe. There's a reason why no one bitches half as much about defensive Grass as they do about defensive Ice: defensive Grass actually works.

TL;DR: Grass is an okay defensive type.

Keep in mind the only trainer with it is in Fantina's gym, if you fuck up the math. You'd have to be going out of your way to get them wrong considering there's a calculator on your bottom screen. Not to mention you only get a vague hint as to where Drifloon is, about 3 hours into the game

Shadow Ball didn't exist in Gen 1. The only Ghost Moves were LICK AND NIGHT SHADE.
Your options were a 20 BP Attack that was useless on Gengar, or Night Shade which was useless unless you were Level 100.
Not that it mattered anyways, because as it was mentioned earlier Psychic Types are immune to Ghost Moves in Gen 1.

Espicially since you can get Axew and Bagon right at the start and then Gible and Goomy mid game.

The only reason to choose a Noivern is if you've used all those pokemon before or just really like its design.

They throw Dragon types at you in X/Y

Yeah, FRLG only had the Original 151 instead of expanding the Pokedex with the new Evolutions/Pre-Evolutions. Also unlike other games, it was coded to prevent Pokemon from evolving into Non-151 Pokemon until the National Pokedex was obtained.
HGSS had an expanded Pokedex, but also lacked the coding that made FRLG a bitch.

In Gen VI I just used GTS to evolve my Pokémon.

Why do so many Gen V Pokémon do this?
I haven't played Gen V yet. But hoooly shit in completing my Living Dex seemingly half of all Gen V Pokémon need to be 40+/50+ to evolve. Gen I-IV didn't require such high levels except for pseudo's and the rare 40+ (like Ponyta)

Pawniard, Deino, Rufflet, Vullaby and Larvesta all come to mind requiring tediously high levels.
