In none of the older generations this happened.
If you played Yellow, and used a Fly Charizard/Dragonite or Surf Pikachu against someone with RBG, no problem.
And in every other generation after, none of this happened either, even with the introduction of items and such; maybe some of them were impossible to get in some versions but they were there, in the data.
If you used Bullet Punch Scizor against someone playing just DP; nothing happened.
ORAS is the first game that is outright not fully compatible with the other game of the same generation.
