At minimum, Weavile, Mamoswine, Gliscor, Yanmega, Honchkrow, Leafeon, and Glaceon are very good Gen IV cross-gen evolutions. Even some of the others are debatable.

The main problem comes with the clashing styles.
A simpler Gen 1 or 2 Pokemon evolving into a hideous Gen 4 Pokemon is just gross. If they actually tried to keep the visual style and theme of the line they'd look a lot better.

They're all shit.
Some of them are alright on their own, but they never fit with the rest of the line. Bellossom looks like a standalone Pokemon, and has absolutely no visual connection to the others in its family.

Another example is Frosslass. Pretty cool mon, but if you didn't know it was connected to Snorunt you'd think it was completely standalone.

Also, Dusnoir, Electivire, Magmortar and Gallade are all painted piles of cat vomit. Slowking is pretty shit too. Why does he have a shower cap around his neck?

Politoed looks like a clown, it doesn't remotely resemble the rest of the family.

I'm not saying Politoed is shit, I'm say it's shittily connected. Even a really awesome Pokemon like Crobat looks weird when placed next to the rest fo the family. The others are these big mouthed, goofy monster things and then Crobat is this sleek pellet shape with a tiny mouth.

Almost all the Gen 4 cross-evos looked like vomit, but even the earlier ones just clashed. I think Steelix is the only one that, if someone told me, I would believe came in the same generation as Onix. I mean, what the fuck is Scizor? It looks nothing like Scyther. It's a cool Pokemon, but it bears no resemblance to its family.
It happens with the babies too. I don't expect anyone to defend babies, though.

Some Pokemon just really have radically different designs upon evolution. There's always the classic Octillery case, or something more subtle like Claydol, or something completely fucking awful like Samurott

I tend to judge designs individually and only give flak when the design in question is completely awful compared to the rest of the line rather than different

It's not supposed to! Tadpoles don't resemble frogs. It wouldn't have been wrong to make the designs more similar (like the Tympole line), but I don't think they were obligated to, because in real life a frog's stages look completely dissimilar. The spiral that you pointed out is enough of a connection to keep the line coherent.

Look at the Eeveelutions. Even the newer ones keep the visual theme of the line. The same eyes, the same overall fox-like shape. Sylveon is a bit much with all the bows and ribbons, but it still keeps with the visual theme.

But then you have fucking Electivire who is some sort of big gorilla man with tentacles, completely ditching the oni theme of Electabuzz.

"It gets bigger" is sometimes good, sometimes bad. If it can "get bigger" but add something interesting then it's good. Mismagius is basically a bigger Misdreavous, but it builds a witch theme onto it.
Tangrowth is literally just a bigger Tangela and is shit for that.

I don't think every Pokemon should just be two of the prevolution glued together, but it's nice when they can keep a theme, it makes them look like they actually belong together.

Remember, evos of a Pokemon aren't like an older version of the prevo; they're completely new monsters. Ambipom for some reason decided to double the tails and cut off the finger tips leaving them as a bloody mess, gave it gangly arms and an arrow nose

They were new stones. No Gen 2 evo evolves with a Leaf, Fire, Water, Thunder or Moon Stone, it's all Sun Stone, Likewise, no Gen 4 evo evolves with a Leaf, Fire, Water, Thunder, Moon or Sun Stone, it's all Shiny, Dusk or Dan Stone.
You can bet if we ever get more cross-gen evos, they won't use any of those stones, and will probably use new ones, which just bloats the amount of items unnecessarily.
