it's mainly highly rated by nostalgia-fags (which, not going to lie, I watched this movie a shit ton as a kid), but as far as kids movies go it is below average. if you watch it, go into it knowing it's a movie made for kids. it's a decent pokemon movie compared to some of the others.

From an objective POV its honestly not a good movie, but if you're the sort of person who would even be on /vp/ to begin with, not only SHOULD you watch it, but theres a good chance you'll actually enjoy it.

I personally just bought the new release DVD version a week ago.

Its bullshit it doesn't have the Pikachu's Summer Break short at the beginning.

I've been here since day one, most of the time this movie is mentioned, its praising it.

This is the first time I've seen a thread about this with a lot of responses to the effect of "its good for it being a Pokemon movie, but its objectively not a great film, even for a kids film."

And I've never even glimpsed r/Pokemon so I have no comment in regard to that.

I liked the dub. The songs made the movie for me. It's true that the Japanese version is objectively better, but seeing it dubbed in theatres at age 9 was enough to prevent me from sleeping while the four songs played on repeat in my head all night. I was blown away by how amazing it was.

I was just a little shit and didn't know any better, but the dub songs do have a certain charm to them not found in the Japanese version.

Apparently 4Kids used some of the Japanese music for the movie in their dubs for the anime, so it dosn't really carry the same weight as it could have... Still, hearing the original music and its scene make it pretty clear how hamfisted the movie dub was in comparison huh

Clusterfuck honestly. The best part about anything to do with Anime Mewtwo was the short about his origin story. This movie didn't really accomplish anything and ended up retconning itself out of the show which started the trend of having all the movies barely be connected to the show at all. In the end they're all just advertisements for the games and promote whichever legendary they haven't made a movie of yet, or in some cases reuse Pokemon that have already had movies like Mew or Celebi

Pokemon 3 is probably better

Even as a kid I thought it was just okay. The novelty of seeing Pokemon on the big screen was neat, but that was about all I got from it.

Looking back on it now I feel like it would have been better as an anime special, like Mewtwo Returns was.

Power of One definitely seemed more movie worthy, that one had a bit more of an 'epic' feeling to it.

Personally, I think I appreciate the third movie a lot more because literally every other movie has the 'fate of the world' at stake. The stakes in 3 felt a lot more personal and smaller in comparison, and it's something I can appreciate

This is one of those films you thought was the greatest at 8 years old, and then you go back and watch it as an adult and it's a feces tier movie overall.

At least the Japanese version is longer and has more content, so the story feels bigger and more movie sized. But even then, it's still mediocre at best.
