Every Pokemon has been developed to fight. You think Blastoises cannons serve any real purpose other than using high pressure water attacks? You think Alakazam needed to have an IQ of 3000 or whatever other than to use high powered psychic attacks and kinesis? You think Pikachu needed to store electricity in its cheeks for anything other than discharging electricity?

Other than some Pokemon that use their abilities for hunting, Pokemon have naturally high offense and defense along with regenerative abilities unmatched by humans

Those basic traits are meant for survival, not enslavement and cockfighting. Several pokedex entries state that Pokemon eat each other (Pidgey and Caterpie, etc.). Blastoise have cannons because Sharpedo exist. Pikachu store electricity in their cheeks because of roving packs of Houndoom. Alakazam's IQ started climbing when it was an Abra that needed to teleport away from predators.

When humans stopped being pokémon they seemed to have lost a lot of combat prowess across the board. Without repels you can't keep pokémon from fucking your town and shit up.
So what's the best way to warding off troublesome pokémon? Other pokémon. And what's the best way to ward off some troublesome fags using pokémon to ruin your day? Other pokémon. Considering this shit was life and death for your people you would encourage those few individuals who could manage tame and train these monsters effectively. The more monsters they acquired and the better trained they become the amount of invaders who could push their shit in grew smaller. Anyway, TL;DR it's a very old cultural practice.

Some people battle. Others do not. I feel it is the same for pokemon. Some like to become strong, others are fine with what they have. Regardless, they must defend themselves. I agree that the fighting done by most humans has no purpose. Perhaps there are pokemon that are the same way, who use their power to dominate over others. Some will run, and others will fight back.

If you truly feel the way you do about pokemon, then you will trust that they can make that decision on their own.
