Story and Savior shit: Gens 3 through 6 have shitty stories based on mythical pokemon being hunted by the evil cult team, and only you can save the world.
Shirty characters:May in gen 3 who onlt battles you like 3 times; Dawn in gen 4 who never battles you; Cheren, Bianca, N, Hugh, every gym leader and every elite 4 member, and both champions from gen 5; Lysander, Diantha, and AZ from gen 6.
Gen 1 characters are memorable without having to have longwinded, tragic, stereotypical archetyped interactions. It had a basic plot that allowed for you to experience the world around you, not some handheld guide from one event to the next. So, yes, in comparison to gen 3 onward, gens 1 and 2 had much better writting.
