I like golem because geodude's evolutionary line was the first pokemon I ever nicknamed (albeit by accident), and somehow carrying that hunk of granite around in red with a unique moniker really helped it grow on me.
Now I wouldn't go around boasting about his stats or combat potential, but he's certainly not the worst pokemon out there for his typing and movesets; he's good enough to get me through the main game, which is honestly where I spend most of my time playing.
tl;dr I like him because of attachment and he's not horrible.
