The problem with the last two fem champions is that they revolved around useless gimmicks like dragon princess and movie star. All style and absolutely no substance.

They were also the most incompetent at defending their region short of Blue who wasn't the champion yet anyway. How the flying fuck can you call yourself a region's champion yet not know the evil team is still active or that one of their admins is part of your E4?

They're not the pokepolice...it's not their job to know things like that.

Unova was a huge outlier with its gym leaders/E4 members greatly involved in regional politics. Seems like normally they all just sit waiting for challengers.

Lance helped trash Rocket's Johto hideout.
Steven was fairly active against Magma/Aqua, and Wallace showed up when shit was really hitting the fan.
Cynthia appeared at Spear Pillar and followed Cyrus into the Distortion World.

Iris and Diantha are the outliers for being the only useless reigning champions.
