I do actually still expect Latias and Zekrom join them too, they are strictly related theme wise. Perhaps Xerneas and the others will get an own arena or something, wish normal and other common but popular mons will get their themed arenas too.

Either DLC, or they were just lazy and didn't make the character select screen look better.

I'm wondering if maybe Pikachu Libre and Regular Mewtwo were last minute additions to the game in order to beef up the roster size.

With two less characters, the roster would form a perfect rectangle.

Look at the Smash Wii U CSS with all of the DLC. Now look at Pokken. Now back at Smash. Now look at me. I'm on the Internet.
Those aren't "empty slots", they're just space that they keep empty because they didn't want to take up more time making more characters but still wanted to make the character selection a perfect square.

It just seems weird that, given the ammount of characters they had, they went with the top option instead of the bottom one here, which looks much better in my opinion.
