Scarf smeargle gained popularity early on because general speed is a bit lower this year, with most legends being around the base 90 mark, but now people are running sash again so people spam fake out and run into a spiky shield. Also, smeargle + geo Xerneas is a common lead; you have a difficult choice of what's the bigger threat, the setup sweeper or the dog that puts your whole team to sleep, basically putting on a lot of pressure from turn one.

True. Gotta give it to that Korean with the Lilligant and White Kyurem. Still there is a disproportionate amount of Primaldons just because of how amazingly overpowered they made it.

The only reason anyone supports VGC is because it's official. Outside of that it's complete garbage that no one would take seriously if it was just a fan format.

It's speaks volumes when VGC's one glory day was only achieved when a massive chunk of the dex was banned.

Cherrim used to be decent (not good mind you) when Ubers power levels were significantly lower... so about 2 generations ago. Now with Primals and Mega evolutions around it just cannot compete.

Besides, having a pure support Pokemon that cannot either strike back hard (Talonflame) or put the opponent to sleep (Smeargle, Amoonguss, maybe Liligant) is just asking for trouble.

I might just add that the 'Ray-Ogre' setup is pretty much the 2nd standard team. They are extremely popular in Japna and Europe. TR versions of it frequently carry Mawile.

That's December 2014, aka Greninja Meta when Scarf Lando-T was the norm. No Pokemon breaks 30% usage these days.
VGCfags really have no right to slander us Smogonfags these days, when there's over 50 common and nearly 100 more niche mons we can reliably use, but only about a third or less of those in official metas.
