I'd say Gold/Silver/Crystal, primarily due to their age (they are far better than gen 1 in that respect, but far worse than more recent games.)

I mean, when you think about it, they are the least polarising games - few people consider gen 2 the absolute best, and even less find it the absolute worst. It tends to sit in the middle of everyones rankings.

They are solid games that did decently with remakes, but aren't without their flaws.

FRLG seems like the safe bet. Nothing particularly great about them, nothing particularly terrible about them. Generations I's love/hate is split evenly between RBY. Gen II's is split evenly between GSC. Generation IV's is focused on DP but certain criticisms affect all of DPPtHGSS. Generation V's love goes to BW2 and the hate goes to BW. Generation VI is focused on ORAS but XY don't escape criticism.

Only FRLG seem to escape this pattern. The Hoenn games tank all of Gen III's issues and FRLG get off scot-free while not doing anything special enough to warrant GOAT status.

No, FR/LG don't get off scott free, they suffered from some of the single worst design choices in a game to date.

I still stand by G/S/C, even with HG/SS they were merely good, not great, a comfortable pokemon outing without doing anything extraordinary or awful.
