It's not supposed to be pretty. I would say it's even supposed to NOT be pretty. It's a pokémon with a very unpleasant personality, and its colors are supposed to be for camouflage in the first place anyway.

Kelp browns when it dies and purple usually means toxic. Both of these convey poison really well and dragon is inferred through the same logic as Kingdra, seahorses called sea dragons in japan. It has good colors that let you know its typing

Just like Zee is actually closer to the original pronunciation of Zeta where the letter stems from instead of Zede which comes from French.

It's kind of surprising really. I mean they're both actually wrong, but Zee is the closer of the two amazingly.

Except for English, apparently. I'm still not sure if it's a dialectal thing, but I'm pretty sure most people in the US pronounce the 'g' as a 'j'
