But they sure would conmemorate the series before putting a definite end to it.
They sorta did it with Metroid. The series "ended" with Gunpei Yokoi's death in 199x until they retook the series with Fusion and Prime at 2002.

There was a three year gap between Yokoi's death and Super Metroid anon.
They didn't have anything planned.
