It wasn't an awful generation. XY brought a lot of interesting ideas to the table, as did ORAS. At the same time, there were some questionable additions that I would say weren't the best they could have done. Some of what really worked:
>the new pokemon
>megas were an interesting addition
>fairy type shook up the game a bit, made everyone have to learn the new type advantages
>sneaking/DexNav
>continuing to improve story elements (I'd argue Kalos' history, AZ, Looker's sidequest, the Delta Episode were good, and even the basic story to ORAS was improved from the original)
>trainer customization
>breeding/EV training
>online options
And some of what didn't work:
>megas could have been lessened for more actual evolutions
>story was still not that great, and most characters were meh, especially after Gen V
>some new ideas were executed poorly (sky battles, pokemon riding)
>some ideas weren't executed enough (inverse battles, still hardly any triple/rotation battles)
>lack of major postgame, particularly in XY
>removal of seasons
Overall it wasn't a bad generation at all, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I just hope they learn from this and try to improve from here.
