The gen 3 games are the ones that I spent the most time growing up with, so I have a lot of nostalgia for them. However, the later generations introduced many things that make even gen 3 feel outdated:
- Lack of the Physical/Special split means a lot of Pokemon struggle to get good coverage with their most powerful stat
- Having less moves in general means that Pokemon have limited move options
- Most Pokemon in gen 3 had awful level-up learnsets, they didn't learn decent moves until they were around level 40 and you needed to keep them in their lowest evolution or else they wouldn't learn the moves at all
- TMs weren't reusable, so you felt afraid to use them (which made the learnset problem mentioned above even more apparent)
- You can't run indoors (it's a small thing but it does slow you down a lot)
- Pokemon diversity is pretty shit, most routes have the same Pokemon and the unique Pokemon are usually pretty rare
- Completing the Pokedex is a chore because you either need all 5 main-series games or you need access to the Gamecube games
- Ruby/Sapphire had pretty much no post-game. FRLG added the Sevii Islands but Kanto itself has always been a pretty barren region. Emerald at least had the Battle Frontier.
Honestly people give ORAS a lot of shit but they actually fixed at least half of gen 3's problems by simply using modern mechanics introduced in the later generations. If they had included the Battle Frontier and given you the national Pokedex from the very start, it would have been excellent.
