The actual reason for this is that Pokemon R/B/Y's target audience were entering teenage years where it became "uncool" to like Pokemon when R/S came out. By the time D/P were released they were old enough to not give a fuck about what other people think of them over their hobbies. I personally witnessed this phenomenon with several of the people at my school.
Plus there is the fact that the DS had a much bigger install base than the GBA because it's the most successful handheld of all fucking time.
