I live in NY and the starting town was roughly equivalent to my neighborhood, so I will always be biased by loving Unova.

I loved the region and the linearity was nice after the annoying clusterfuck that was Sinnoh. It also didn't require you to use a combination of HMs to explore it. It's my favorite region tied with Hoenn.

There has always been linearity in these games. RGBY were easily exploitable, but you need to go through a lot of effort to skip certain gyms. GSC were the only games with real open endedness and it was a clusterfuck of bad level scaling. I would say that Unova's biggest con is that the Entra-Link forest now serves no purpose without DreamWorld/online. There's that big center point that seems important, but now is just there reminding you that BW online is dead.

I feel I'm the only one who appreciated Mt. Coronet being the heart of the region. Having to pass through it was always a reminder of how far I've gotten. Plus I just really love exploring caves. Best Snow areas as well. The marshes were also interesting to get through. Sinnoh made the travel feel like an actual adventure.

I started disliking Hoenn after Unova. That route you posted just makes no sense: small sides here and there (not much space to walk around), the river is not completely passable because of the fucking bicycle bridge that also makes no sense. Also the graphics in Hoenn and Kanto (remakes) always felt so boring (textures are repeated way more than in the nintendo DS titles.

All the other games were just as linear as Unova in terms of story and order of events, they just weren't geographically linear. The only pokemon game you can do things out of order to a significant degree is gen II and it's worse for it. You had to do everything in a strictly determined and linear order, just sometimes you backtracked to a location you'd already been to instead of constantly progressing like in Unova.

Route 2's western section that leads to that enormous water route with Larvesta and P2 Lab? Resort Desert? Numerous off-the-beaten-path strength puzzles? Wellspring Cave's basement? Twist Mountain's caves? Clay Road? Relic Passage? Castelia Sewers? All of the Moor of Icirrus, a massive, entirely optional area? Pretty much all of eastern Unova? All that post-game area of both sets of games? Those absolutely massive Victory Roads?

the more you interact with what's already given to you, the better cohesiveness the region has.

this was well established with red and blue. it's a shame it's rarely used any more.

it worked best with an urban region but each game seems to want to explore too many new themes to keep it simple.

not that it can't be done, but if history has shown us anything is that gamefreak values gimmicks more than traditions.

Backtracking is not bad if you are unlocking new areas and rewards to explore, and thats what backtracking in b/w did.

But that route wasn't a desert. It's literally called a badland, and it has an in game reason of too much irrigation. There isn't even sand anywhere. Compared to the snowy mountains bordering the swamps in later routes, this is pretty well thought out. I don't understand why people keep calling it a desert and out of place. Sure, there's greenery to the north of it, but that's just because that part wasn't used all up for farming.
