Think about how many times other characters call you "he" or "she" or "her" or "him". This is hardly ever, if ever at all. At best, I could see "Red if the Champion now. His Pokemon are strong" to "Red is the champion now. Their Pokemon are strong", which if I remember correctly, Pokemon games do already pretty often.
