Why is this thing so overrated? Its design is boring and battle wise it's completely outclassed by garchomp.

It has a different niche than Garchomp. It's useful as a defogger and being Dragon/Ground with Levitate gives it a few useful resistances.

Generally Pokemon have niches that mean they're not purely outclassed. Alakazam has a niche over Mewtwo in that it's not fucking banned from ranked, and has better abilities. Also its mega is faster.

Flygon, on the other hand, is PURELY outclassed by Garchomp in every conceivable way.

Its the closest thing we have to a bug dragon. Its also pretty cute for a fully evovled dragon, but not too cute like Altaria.

It has the element of surprise, Trapinch evolving into a dragon.
It has a cool and appealing design.
You also have to remember that before Hoenn, dragons were limited to Dratini line and...Kingdra.
So people were excited for more dragons, and this one was about mid-game, so not that bad.
Of course, Altaria existed, but most players were young males and you know how that goes.
Ground/Dragon was also a cool typing.
It was also featured on the cover of Pokémon Ranger, if that means anything.

Which is why I absolutely dislike Garchomp. Flygon back in the day was a combination uniqueness,coolness,viable, and amazing. Until that broken abomination of a design eclipsed it completely. Now I feel the same pain from Blazikenfags in Gen 4.

Garchomp is popular only because it is really good in battle since its first appearance in the series.
Its design is too overrated. Overdesigned, it need too many colors for insignificant details, too many spikes without reason... really forced "edgy" mon.

Flygon is just boring but at least it lacks many ridiculous details.

Shit comparison.
Pikachu's popularity was actually forced in our faces throughout the decades that its popular enough for non fans to recognize it. Flygon became a massive fan favorite by people recognizing its appeal alone and Gamefreak didn't need to market the shit out of it.

I firmly believe that even if he wasn't picked as the franchise mascot Pikachu would end up being very popular by the strenght of its own design alone.

As someone who started playing the games before watching the anime Pikachu was one of those Pokemon that instantly caught my attention as a kid. It was basically the first not weak/shitty looking thing you could catch in Blue, kind of like Mareep in Gold and Silver (and Ampharos was literally everyone's favorite back when those games were all the rage). Being a rare encounter in Viridian Forest and controlling a cool element (Electric) only added to it's appeal.

Then Garchomp comes out and shits all over it battle-wise. Garchomp looks "edgy" and its superiority to Flygon only reinforced love for Flygon and made a lot of Flygon fans hate Garchomp out of bitterness.

I made this writeup a year ago about it. I got a minor detail wrong (Flygon already knew U-Turn in Gen IV) but for the most part I think it's pretty in-depth. It was actually voted the third best post of all time and I won reddit gold for ti. Somebody spent thirty dollars on this. Kind of funny how redditors are butthurt Flygonfags, Garchomp is my favorite Pokemon myself.
