Let's talk about Gen 2 for a second.

It's the least talked about Gen on this board that's for sure. (Depending on whether you count HGSS as 2 or 4). In fact, it's probably the least shitted on.

I feel like I can really say that the MAJORITY of this board likes it more than 1 and 6, but not more than 3/4/5.

So /vp, what are your opinions on Gen 2? Do you love it? Hate it?

We all know the reason no one shits on it is because it has the least problems out of any Gen

It's the most circle jerked and highly acclaimed Gen on this board. Despite the obvious flaws, people love this game so much. You can provide criticism for any other Gen, but you're shitposting or underaged if you say anything bad about Gen 2.

i started with gen 2. my prior experience with pokemon was 2nd hand from my cousin who had yellow.

gen two will forever be the most replayable gen for me. it just has such a good feel to it.

the music, the locations, the progression. everything feels just, right. i am yet to pin down what specifically i like most, but it just seems to work well everywhere.

it's on my bucket list to buy a sealed box of gold within the year, since my original was stolen many years ago. best price so far is $450 dollarydoos.

Improved in every single way by HGSS, so unless you have a raging boner for old games/Crystal sprites you would enjoy HGSS instead.

But taking that out of the way, those were pretty good games. They all brought a lot of stuff into the franchise, most notably genders for pokemon and breeding.

Based Iwata making Kanto fit, for all the shit it takes for being smaller or whatever, they have to understand what kind of miracle they pulled to get all that in the games.

I'm a part of the crowd that loves gen 2, what are its apparent flaws that many people seem to be mentioning here? Aside from the level curve and the bad Pokémon distribution, I honestly can't think of anything.

I've heard people mention Kanto was dull compared to gen 1, but considering it wasn't even originally meant to be included I can forgive it, and the remakes make it feel a lot more lively and true to gen 1.

What I'd fix with Johto is giving the gym leaders more Johto Pokémon, I'd also fix the rates for a few really rare mons that have no business being so rare, and put some fucking dark types in Johto.

Very barren. Kanto is essentially a gimmick and really just 8 gyms plus a final boss. It's a great concept, but overall it leaves the game feeling rather empty. The Johto part of the game is pretty bad too.
HGSS on the other hand, they fixed some issues, but not the majority. The pokeatholon though is incredibly fun as well as the pokewalker. The gimmicks in HGSS worked unlike gen 6.

well i don't know about hgss but in the gameboy versions all you had to do was get the phone number of a specific trainer to get the call for a swarm. for dunsparce it's hiker anthony right before azalea town.

I love Johto, but both GSC and HGSS have some pretty big flaws. HGSS fixes Kanto being utterly barren to an extent by at least restoring it to its original state, but the level curve and handling of 1% encounters are even worse in it than GSC.

I also hate several of HGSS's graphical overhauls. Caves are too bright, the greenery is too blue, Ecruteak is suddenly all autumn-like while the rest of the region isn't. Also in the English version pretty much all the dialogue that isn't ripped wholesale from GSC's localization is extremely awkward.

There's a constant circle jerk around these games, they are basically the new gen 1 at this point.
The worst part is that I get called underage or troll whenever I criticize it even though Gold was my first pokemon game I finished.

It (or less Gen 2, and more Johto in general) is really highly regarded and always talked about.

The games that get talked about the least here are FRLG

I always fought every trainer and did an acceptable amount of light grinding between gyms and my pokes were always around 3-4 lvs above gym leaders. AND I beat the game in a fair amount of time. It wasn't like I was spending hours grinding away, 10 mins here, 10 mins there. I loved every minute of those games. (gen 1,2,3)

and also - I can kind of understand not wanting to grind at all. but skipping trainer battles!?! Isn't that most of the fucking fun of the game? Why are you even playing Pokemon?

Gen 2, while great when it was the only option, is now tragically average. Almost everything that made it good has been included in a better game by now. HGSS was almost exactly the same, a good game but literally nothing puts it above other games. Yet on the flipside, it is pretty much impossible to rank them as worst, because of their averageness.

This is why gen 2 is always going to be better than gen 1 and below gen 3 4 and 5 (and depending on the person, 6.) That isn't saying they are bad games, because they weren't and still aren't, but they have nothing unique to them.

It's like vanilla icecream. It's almost impossible to hate. But that doesn't mean there aren't better flavours out there.

(For reference I played every gen as they came, and I personally find Hoenn to be the best region, 6 is the best mechanically, and I appreciate every region and dex for different reasons. I have no real bias, I just like Pokemon.)

Will I get ripped apart if I pull out the comfy buzzword? For me HG/SS are the best primarily for the simple fact of liking Johto the most as a region, and having a lot of nostalgia for Kanto. Plus, as people have said, they're games packed with features and have only TWO major flaws, these being level curve and Pokemon distribution - two things very easily fixed with a simple ROM patch that even a child would be able to make themselves

What I mean to say is, every single generation has flaws, but the flaws in HG/SS are easily fixed. Fixing, say, the lack of day/night in RSE or the complete fucking clusterfuck instability in Gen I is significantly more work

GSC had a big problem with the level curve (I remember when I played as a kid, none of my Pokemon were over lvl 50 before the 8th gym).

HGSS fixed that. I like GSC, but I definitely would rather play HGSS.
