However I think we can all agree that writers are at least trying harder to write the female leads instead of just sticking one in to fill a quota. This was a sin of the Kanto-Johto seasons. Hoenn was an attempt to do better, even post-Hoenn had a whole episode where May's the hero. Sinnoh refined the art of handling girl characters.
The sad fact about Misty was that she was only there for pandering to a girl audience without doing much to cater to them. Say what you will about how "great" Shudo's era was but this was the greatest flaw on the record because they had no idea how to handle her as a character and just resigned when Togepi came into the picture.
