I mean I don't hate or dislike any protag, I just don't like him as much when I look at his base design. Hilbert has the some of the highest potential to look the nicest when drawn well. At least he's bland and not... poofy looking like Diamond/Lucas lmfao. Poor Lucas. He was honestly the least impacting/memorable protag ever.
I was also turned off Ruby because I only liked him for the white hair which turned out to be a beanie fml. I never bothered with the actual manga so I never knew till it was blatantly pointed out to me one day. Also he looks fucking weird in ORAS, especially since they made him look like a fucking cyclist.
I just don't think Hilbert is as nice to look at, everyone draws him super cute but he's not like that at all in the game? Again, if we were going by manga standards, then yes he IS that cute, but game-wise he's really, really standard.
My opinion about Gold and Nate being less dull should be quite obvious to most people. They definitely stick out when contrasted with Calme (X), Lucas (Diamond) and Hilbert. The use of colours, the flair, the contrast, the choice of face etc. But that's not to say that being more "expressive" means it's better for everyone, it's just better for me. c:
LASTLY, I don't particularly like the face of Sun. Hopefully we can change the god awful eye shape. Besides, he's Calme 2.0. Another character that can be customized, but looking at the base... eurgh.
