The state is called Hawaii but it's also the name of a specific island. Pretty sure that's the case here. Are we sure "Meremere" is the name of something not like, an adjective or something though? It sounds like a Japanese adjective or descriptor or something. It hasn't otherwise been pointed out by anything, right?

The first option is "Alola Dex", which would be the entire regional Pokédex. It is then broken down into sub-sections for each island. Since the sub-section containing the starters is "Melemele Dex" then the starting island is most likely "Melemele Island". Mele is Hawaiian for "song/chant/poem", so it'd roughly be something like "Singsong Island".
