The move is called Meteor Drive (メテオドライブ) in Japanese. Meteors are just as much an elemental representation of steel/metal and minerals as they are of fire.

Er... no. Not to most people. But it would still explain in the context of Pokemon why it would be Steel because of Metagross/Jirachi/Meteor Mash. It still doesn't explain why that stuff is Steel to begin with or why the Sun Pokemon would be associated with meteors/shooting stars.

Well Gamefreak created their own elemental system if you can call it that within the Pokemon universe. Moon equals fairy. Light equals steel, meteors = steel as well.

Yet Ice and Water are two seperate types.

That was the point. There's a reason Solgaleo is Steel/Psychic that we may not be entirely clear on yet, but it isn't because it's just "the sun" and because Steel-type makes sense as a representative type for it.

Heat Wave isn't literally an attack with fire, lava isn't literally fire, and there's probably even more examples, and people acting like the sun isn't commonly associated with fire and like people who thought solgaleo might be fire were so obviously and stupidly wrong blows my fucking mind. I wasn't sold on Fire-type because it didn't look Fire-type but yveltal doesn't look especially Dark, Xerneas look especially Fairy, Reshiram doesn't look especially fire, and etc. so who knows and Fire was as good as the fucking dimension Space pokemon being Water-type.

People tihnk of giant flaming rocks from space. Mayeb after they've landed people would just think "hunks of rock" but the imagery of a landed meteor and shooting star/meteor in the sky is totally different and associated with very different things.

Solgaleo isn't based off mythology based off the sun, Solgaleo is based off the sun itself. And anyone who didn't fail highschool science classes knows the sun produces metal.

Yes, flaming rocks. When people think of meteors they think of fire and rocks. And when people think about rocks they think about minerals. For shit's sake, the biggest cliche regarding meteors is the "Alien Mineral/Element/Monster" to be found inside. One of the biggest cliches for magical weapons is that it was forged from metal from the heavens, tying back to the meteorite containing Super-Strong Space Metal.

People associate alien/heavenly properties to meteors all the time.

Honestly, I don't care that it's Steel. The Psychic typing is what annoys me. Steel/Electric or Steel/Fire would make way more sense. There are way too many Psychic legendaries anyway.

The imagery and themes associated with a crash landed meteorite is a totally different thing than a meteor shooting across the sky, just like the ocean can be peacefully symbolic or stormy. But it's clear which symbolism Solgaleo was going for based on the fucking attack animation-- the flaming meteor. There was no reason to question it was Fire-type after seeing that attack animation. No it wouldn't. But it's not inaccurate to make it a steel type either, yet the board is currently filled with shitters going SOLGALEO SHOULD NOT BE SUN TYPE! SUN IS NOT STEEL IT'S FIRE! It doesn't matter what the average person would think about the sun, making the sun pokemon a steel type is SCIENTIFICALLY correct. Yes, I'll happily agree that making it a fire type would be CULTURALLY correct, and I wouldn't be upset if Solgaleo had been fire instead of steel. My fucking gripe is the people upset that it's steel instead of fire, when steel is just as correct a typing to give it as fire.

Also it annoys me the fact that many previous legendary duos either counter each others' types (Palkia/Dialga) or just have types that do no super-effective damage to each other (Lugia/Ho-oh). In this case not only we have another fucking psychic but also one that has a clear disadvantage against Lunala, provided GF won't reintroduce the Steel resistance against Ghost-type moves

In the trailer Slamence's HP showed that it had 0 HP IVs so I'm asuming they use blank stats all around for both. I Gave Solgaleo 150 Atk as a guess. With that, Sunsteel Strike would have to be at least 130 BP to ohko salamence
>0 Atk Metagross Meteor Mash vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Salamence: 135-159 (87 - 102.5%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO

With max Atk it would have to be at least 90, but again that's just the lowest it can be and still have a chance of ohkoing

It's not "just as correct", at least not on the basis that it's the sun Pokemon and is based on the sun. The most immediatley identifiable aspect of the sun is that it is extremely hot. If something is extremely hot, it would be fire. We also know that pokemon includes many things that don't involve literal fire being Fire-type because of being extremely hot or otherwise associated with something hot. The Steel typing is correct for Solgaleo but for a totally different reason than being a representation of the sun, in the same way Palkia or Dialga make sense as their types in hindsight because their types aren't representative of their domain but their version names. This is basically kind of the opposite case, where they have a thematic basis related to but not exactly a literal representation of the Sun or Moon (in this case, the mercury/metal lion that eats the sun in alchemy). If it were literally just the Sun Fire-type is just objectively more correct, due to Sunny Day if nothing else.

The reason because it's a psychic two-tailed cat involved with daylight in contrast with Umbreon. The reason Sunflora isn't Fire is because it's a sunflower. The reason Solrock isn't Fire is because it's a rock powered by psychokinesis. The reason Solgaleo isn't Fire is because it's the alchemical symbol and not a literal representation of the sun which would 100% definitely be Fire-type because of Sunny Day and the sun weather empowering fire-types just based on OP's logic even if you genuinely 100% believe in your heart of hearts that you think Steel is perfectly good type for a Sun Pokemon as though the Pokemon universe has any care for the minutia of being accurate.
