I'm not trying to throw it out as a buzzword, it's actually extensively documented behaviour of people on the autistic spectrum, putting things into groups made up of various arbitrary rules they invent, and getting severely upset when people break those rules. Look at all the people who keep talking about Zodiac fire-starters, Prehistoric grass-starters, and water-starters with weaponry, even though Feraligatr clearly doesn't have a weapon. But they ignore that because Feraligatr not having a weapon refutes their perceived pattern. Some try to explain it away, others just completely disregard that fact.
Anything that falls out of what these people deem as applicable for the Fairy Type is ignored, or hamfistedly explained away.
Fairies just need to be cute. They could make a Fairy/Dragon based off Zirnitra if they made it cute enough. They could make a Fairy based off of a Sphinx, if it was cute and feminine enough. And the Sphinx is a female so it's halfway there. It's Gamefreak, if they can make a pokemon based off icecream, key rings, or a ball, they can make anything.
