Well they originated in gen 5 along with plenty of other terribly- designed mons. I think Game Freak just didn't care for gen 5 since they had to shit out around 150 new Pokemon.

I never understood what the fuck simisear is doing in its art and sprite. Its the kind of gesture you make when you put your hands on something wet and nasty, but its face doesn't match that, and it doesn't make sense that he'd be doing that anyway.

Because they're based on the same thing. Weirdly enough Dunsparce is a pretty abstract representation of what it's supposed to be though so I'm surprised it registered for someone who I presume probably doesn't exactly know they're suppsoed to be the same thing.
