We've seen in the trailer in the OP that Ash battles Shota in what have to be the semi-finals. Ash and Alan's previous battle was interrupted and Alan is entering the league just to battle Ash, so Ash isn't losing against Shota and will face Alan in the finals. There's also absolutely no sign of a league-exclusive rival that people love memeing about.

I think it felt stretched like a bubblegum that's lost its taste. Cutting battles in the league is good imo (if they are going for the Ash actually wins route which I think they might do)

The league and some gym battles are the only parts that are actually fun to watch. Trivializing the quarterfinals when Ash has lost at that round 3 times just seems cheap. Ash VS Harrison, Tyson, Paul and unfortunately Cameron have all been top 8 and the best battles of their respective tournaments. Imagine if they skipped straight to the finals?

I will give you Stephan being better than Cameron, despite only being 3 mons.
Harrison was a better battle than Gary honestly. Ash VS Gary was just a huge Charizard VS Blastoise wankfest. Charizard and Blaziken were far less prominent in the battle again Harrison, only appearing during the end. It's also the only well written league loss.

The difference is Alan has a Pokemon and belongs to an organization that could easily take him to a city in Kalos with a gym.
He also has an End-game tier team which he's challenging the Gyms with, so no one could give him a challenge at this point.
Ash on the other hand travels on foot and challenged the gyms as he grew, it's only natural for him to take longer.

Assuming an episode a week, that's really only 20 episodes. We have an obligatory visit back home. And it's not like they can't start SuMo's season a week or two before the games hit since all he does in those first few episodes is catch a starter and maybe a bird or a bug.

The Flare arc is still going to happen after the league, but unless they pull Episode N (lame), they still have a ton of time. Someone speculating how it would play out gave it like two or three weeks of down time before release. They usually do take a break for a week or two before the new series starts.
