You can tell from the look of the books.

SM's is in the standard "book" guide style that most guides are in.

XY has thinner, slim appearance that would make it more like a "travel" guide which I suppose they were going for.

the less amount of pages allows for more content to be put on each page.

BW2 and Platinum have everything in one book. I believe HGSS did too. BW1 and DP were split into two, one for maingame, one for post-game and Pokedex.

XY had a tiny guide. Physically tiny. Smaller pages and big font. SM guides are regular sized. Page count would be less.

and also based in the fact that SM has no new content showed so far. Rotomdex is a more stylized navigator and a grab for the Yokai Watch audience, Nothing showed in the trailers is new, nothing.
