Pokemon are largely random, but I haven't encountered fish on dry land, that kind of thing.
When you encounter a Pokemon (which appear at a certain distance from you, which you can the just tap on the Pokemon to engage it assuming you are close enough) there is a targeting reticule with a shrinking circle. You drag the pokeball to throw it, releasing your finger inside the shrinking circle. The smaller the circle, the more likely the capture and if you miss the circle the ball misses.
You buy pokeballs (cheap, 100 for <500 coin) and the game practically throws money at you in 2500 coin sums for doing stuff like holding a gym for 24hours, etc.
It's exclusively the orginal 150 although idk how it handles legendaries. Also eeveelutions show up at random, I've seen a flareon.
