>>26721089I hate chikorita for the girly design/name but mostly because its a bad!Venusaur (same exact stats just rearranged to be even more useless) and the fact that Johto is specifically designed to make Chikorita the most difficult starter to use in the history of the series, to this day.
>literally the first gym is Flying>second is, of all things, Bugs. One of which is Poison, one of which is Flying>fourth is ghost, all of which are poison because for some reason Johto gym leaders never use Gen 2 'mons. Ever. >Fifth is Chikorita's best shot: Grass resists fighting and Poliwrath is a water-type>Sixth is Steel, albeit it does have a ground-type and iirc grass resists Electric>Seventh is Ice>Dragon cucks all the starter types so at least Chikorita isnt alone hereEvery single gym except chuck and Whitney resist and/or have type advantages to grass in some way, though admittedly there are a few water-types in the last few gyms (Poliwrath, Seal, Seadra line) and a few ground-types (Piloswine, Steelix).
This doesnt change the fact that Cyndaquil melts Gym 2, Croconaw's bite in gen 4 tears through Gym 4, typhlosion and feraligatr BOTH tear steelix a new asshole and typhosion has SE on the magnemites too, same deal with Pryce's Piloswine since ground doesnt resist fire and ice doesnt resist water.
Its jarring, especially when you consider how strong Bulbasaur was in Kanto.
>SE on rock>SE on water>resists electric>has poison (but cant use it) for Grass>gets fucked by Blaine and Sabrina, Koga would be neutral if not for the Hypno>the final boss is a fucking rock/ground spamming dumbass
