Just show a short viginette of each one getting prepared for a contest alongside their pokemon. Hell if its too mundane for the little boys then juxtapose it with some random trainers practing and battling as well.

Idol activity isn't the reason they're objectivel bad. They're bad because the last few episodes are rushed to the point whete it impacts the quality of the story and all the episodes bar the finale can be described with one of 2 plots.

If they were written properly they would be great for reasons other than the qts. One of the reasons a side series would be good, bbecause it wouldn't need to be rushed or focus on a particular character to the point of Mary Sueism. (Thr Rhyhorn instantly flocking to her is Mary Sueism if ever I saw it)
