Another pattern to consider is that the "updated" version of a handheld usually heralds the end of that handheld's lifespan. The GBA SP/Micro both had significantly shorter lifespans than the GBA did, and if I recall, the DSi was out for maybe 2 years before the 3DS was announced. Considering we have the Neo New Mega Ultra 3DS Feat. Fragile Nipple, it's probably worth considering the remaining days of the 3DS to be numbered.
