They were more challenging in the sense that they were much less forgiving, were more confusing, and there was less hand holding. The amount of help you get has increased with each game.

All the games let you do the same thing to circumvent a lack of skill, and there are no real punishments for mistakes besides just losing a battle.

Yes they were. If you needed to grind you were just shit at the game. News alert: levels are the way of setting the trainer's difficulty. That's the entire point of them existing. You're supposed to overcome higher level opponents and if you're grinding you're just shit at the game and using it as a crutch.

You do realize diantha's mega gardevoir is level 68, right?
that is the second highest leveled champ after alder, and considering the fact that he is postgame, she has the highest leveled mon of any champion overall

I never did level grinding though. I'm saying that it took longer to get levels in previous games. Don't read between lines that aren't there. And, no, the games were always at the same level of difficulty. There's always going to be absurdly broken options you can find in every game.

I recently marathoned my way through every main series game, and the older ones are no more difficult than the newer ones. You still get broken shit, the only difference being the EXP curve.

I agree posts like >>26757488 are dumb. The real reason Exeggutor is a joke is that it only has normal attack moves. Hell, having Roar and Whirlwind is worse than having 3 moves because it can make the AI waste their turn.

The only really "difficult" champion so far has been Cynthia.
