If Professor Sycamore studied the concept of Mega Evolution, then will we have a new mechanic involving moves since Professor Kukui researches them?

Him studying moves is a big flag, for me at least, that the mechanic will be similar to what Rayquaza got in oras. The new moves introduced will induce some type of evolution/form change....

I'm guessing moves that function like Dragon Ascent some kind of Mega Evolution which does not require stones to change forme.

Another possibility comes from moves like Flying Press and Freeze Dry. I think we're going to get more dual-typed moves for Gen VII. Total speculation here, it might even relate to the starters + Iwanko. The secret they all have in common might be dual-typed signature moves.

Professor Rowan researched evolution but there wasn't a new mechanic involving that in Gen IV, unless you count the stupid location-based evolutions for Nosepass etc. Birch studied Pokemon habitats but there was no special new mechanic involving those. Juniper studied the origins of Pokemon but there was nothing new regarding that in Gen V.

Then again, Gen II and V conform to the pattern, so I dunno. Maybe.

I hope Gen VII does introduce more moves, though. Adding more moves is ALWAYS good, in fact it's the most significant change the games have made since the early days in my opinion. Going back and playing Gen I and II where movepools are barren and everything learns shitty normal-type moves and no STAB is just painful. I hope they add at least two new moves per type.
