Here is why I believe the QR thing is the most likely.
A single QR code eliminates the need to go to a location for an event pokemon and it eliminates the regional bullshit that has plagued the mythical give away. One QR code for the entire world means everyone can experience the same thing, at the same time, for free.
They can push QR stuff to distribute any and all pokemon in one, easy swoop.
This feature could allow for a lot of things. Not only pokemon distributions but event/item ones too.
I really, strongly believe that this will be the future of events. At least for gen 7. If it fails, bye bye. But if not, great.
