With gen 3 being the first games I played, I thought skram and slugma were gen 3, must have missed the anime episodes with them. Also thought Chime was gen 4 just because I never saw it in the gen 3 games. I was also a stupid kid when it came to continuity.

The only Pokemon I got fucked on is I thought Kecleon was some super rare gen 2 mon. It was pushed with a lot of the Johto merch (as a Gen 3 promo), even showing up in the anime in Johto, and I didn't really connect the dots there. I don't think I've confused anything else.

At least in original Gen 2

Jasmine: Lv 30 Magnemite, Lv 30 Magnetmite, Lv 35 Steelix

Pryce: Lv 27 Seel, Lv 29 Dewgong, Lv 31 Piloswine

In HGSS they upped Pryce's levels a bit (30, 32, 34 respectively).

If you ever play original G/S/C, do Pryce (and the Rocket stuff) before Jasmine. It fixes up the messy level curve a lot.

Ya Koga is easier, especially since all his mons ever ever do is self destruct buy Fuchsia city is all the way down in the arse of Kanto and the two routes are littered with shit trainers that aren't even worth the EXP and to get to those routes, you did to do the game cornir and lavender town shit first. you can go to Saffron before you beat Erika as long as you give one of the check point guards a drink so I'd nearly always do Saffron before
Also Koga was actually harder than Sabrina in Yellow, I only remembered

Sometimes I think I'm the only one on this board that actually likes pokemon enough to pay attention to the little details.

I know every pokemon of a generation as soon as they come out, been that way since I was a kid. Between experiencing all the media except the shitty anime , its super obvious to me what is what. I was fuckin' around with Skarmory in the TCG, Stadium 2, and Silver version. Same with pretty much every pokemon.

So no, I never thought Skarmory was Gen 3. Nor have I mistaken any other pokemon.

I have always known skarmory was gen 2, since I ran into it enough times on that longass route from the last town to like... the first route? I forgot the exact details. Also Chimecho, I randomly encountered one on my first ever Emerald run, I never plaued Ruby or Sapphire. I thought it was rare at the time for whatever reason, so I caught it.

Idk how anyone gets them mixed? It's not something I went out of my way to learn but I know which game every single pokemon belongs to? I suppose I grew up with every gen though.

I never played GSC growing up so I didn't know the Jhoto dex really well. When I got Ruby I also got a big poster of the Hoenn dex, so I thought most of the mons that weren't gen 1 must be gen 3 like Slugma, Houndor, and Corsola. Ten year old me even thought Magcargo evolved into Torkoal which while I thought was weird didn't seem too much of a stretch since they were both fire types with rock-like shells.
Oddly enough I knew Skarmory was gen 2 even back then.
Thing is I learned my mistake real quick. I don't know how all these other people got it wrong for so long.

It has Geodude and Wobuffet also but Wobuffet doesn't show until you go deeper in. Skarmory was in Silver whereas Gold had Gligar. You could catch them south of Blackthorne City which is. ironically, on the other side of the shitty cave very early in the game.

The thing about Gen 2 Pokemon, is that a good amount weren't able to be caught until once you got to Kanto.

That is specifically why Slugma and Skarmory are thought of as Gen 3.

I can sort of see what Game Freak was doing there. They were meant to be "newly-discovered" species, so naturally a lot of Gen 2 mons were really, really rare.

The problem is, that's just not fun. I buy Pokemon games for new mons, not for the same 8 badges and evil team over and over again.

And then Gen 3 swung too far in the opposite direction, with practically no old mons at all.

Glad they learned their lesson by Gen 4.

See this is similar to me. Pokemon wasn't big at my school. I remember playing Yellow in 2nd grade there but with no one else outside my close group of friends.

My sister (6 years older than me) and I had Red and Yellow and watched the anime religiously.

Both of us stopped caring about Pokemon during all of Johto. Neither of us even heard of it. We didn't have a computer at home, so googling what we missed was impossible.

Both of us got some gen 3 games. (I got Ruby and LG and she got Emerald and FR) so Johto pretty much went unnoticed for awhile.
