Primeape appears lined up together with Ash's pokémon in Battle Frontier's OP, unlike his other pokémon who were officially released (Lapras, Butterfree and Pidgeot), who appear on different scenes.
Primeape also appears with Ash's other pokémon in BW Season 2 OP, together with Squirtle and Charizard, who also weren't in Oak's lab unlike everyone else. While the other three I mentioned before don't appear anywhere.
That, combined with the fact that Primeape was never officially released from its poké ball (again, unlike the other three), and instead was just given to someone else "for training" puts it in the same situation as Ash's Squirtle, Ash's Gliscor between DP154 and DP185, and Ash's Charizard before BW116: a pokémon that still officially belongs to Ash, but is with someone else. The same applies to Dawn's Ambipom by the way.
The only difference between Ash's other "in training" mons and Primeape is that the latter never reappeared in the actual show after its episode.
So no, even if that line was only added on the dub for whatever reason, that doesn't mean it was completely wrong, since the japanese openings seem to agree with it.
