It got the best exclusive treatment of the hoenn starter moves. Muddy Water got thrown to a ton of water types and got nerfed, Leaf Blade got a big buff and went to anything with a vine.

I'm pretty sure at some point the elemental punches were supposed to be for Hitmonchan

But somebody fucked up and remembered that type decided physical or special and it ended up backfiring so they gave it to Alakazam and others

in gen 1 the only families that can learn elemental punches with Hitmonchan, Jynx, Electabuzz, and Magmar (jynx/electabuzz/magmar all get the one that corresponds with its type, hitmonchan gets all of them).
