That said, Harinezumi almost always refers to Hedgehogs rather than porcupines. Try googling ハリネズミ and see how many hedgehogs you get vs porcupines.
It is true that Chespin's tail is longer than what a hedgehog has, but then again it looks nothing like a porcupine tail either. Chespin doesn't even have claws.
Just because it's not round doesn't mean it isn't a hedgehog. Sonic isn't round either.
