You might embrace its ugliness (and get something similar to weezing or conkledurr, which are ugly but coherent), or you can attempt to change it into something "beautiful" by creative means.
We know GF chose the latter, but the result is a conglomerative mess. The mouth looks tacked on (think Mr. Potato Head) and extremely human (the triggerfish have lips, but these lips are stylized to look human -- with lipstick to boot), as do the seductive eyes and the sexual expression that the two make together with the barred teeth. The inorganic coloring creates an image so unnatural that, in combination with the above, creates a character rather than a creature; one that would not at all look out of place as an antagonist in a Disney film.
