Are legendary Pokemon (excluding obvious ones like Arceus, Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina) one of a kind creatures or just simply very rare?

Heh...well...I've kinda researched into this...a lot more than most people ever should. I may or may not have written a 3,000+ word essay on this actually...my conclusion (put in a short way) is that excluding the creation trio + Arceus no legendaries are one of a kind. Anybody interested in a simplified version of my paper or should I just realize that I'm a permavirgin and go to bed (I'll make it short).

OK, so, here's what we know:
Legendaries are often referred to with pronouns that imply that they aren't one of a kind (the most obvious example is with Kyogre and Groudon). Using words like "a", "the", "their", "they", etc, implies that what is being talked about is non-unique. Also, legendaries have never been referred to as "unique" or "one-of-a-kind". They have only been referred to as "rare" (implying that there is more than one of each, it's just very uncommon). Next up is the fact that all legendaries can have different natures, IVs, and some can be shiny, meaning that these are different individuals just like any other Pokemon. Legendaries have also been shown to reproduce (baby Lugia, Latios/Latias, Entei's Pokedex entry).Another reason is that multiples of many legendaries are seen throughout the anime (we know they are different because nor the main characters/legendaries in question seem to recognize each other). Finally, in the games, many legendaries can be found in multiple regions (not counting Hoopa rings), heavily implying that these aren't the same Pokemon.

With that logic the Creation Trio wouldn't be unique (in the wild). I'm the anon with the 3000+ "essay". I conclude that the Creation Trio is one of a kind in the wild, but can exist as multiples under the ownership of trainers (Arceus recreates them once they are captured as shown in HG/SS).

Shit like shinies and natures are just results of the game mechanics obviously. Unless it's a case like where Arceus specifically makes you another legendary, there's basically no evidence storywise to assume there's more than one of each legendary.

This is all in game of course, there's no disputing that legendaries aren't one of a kind in the anime. Pretty sure there's even been another Mewtwo in the anime, however way they pulled that off.

Entei's dex mentions one is born whenever a volcano is formed.

Heatran can be either male or female so there's probably multiples.

Just because you can only catch one in the game doesn't mean (in terms of lore) only one exists in the ENTIRE WORLD. One anon already explained this but the can be found in multiple different regions, and some are talked about as if they're just rare but not one-of-a-kind.

Well the fact that Arceus does create a legendary in that event implies that there isn't a reason to assume that any legendary is unique

That's if there were only one. With all current evidence it's probable that Rayquaza (and many other legendaries) aren't one of a kind (even in each specific universe). The anime seems to abide by this theory as well as the games.

That's an opinion. And you're just going to ignore lore because you don't like it? I mean, that's your opinion but it doesn't change the series' story. (Keep in mind that games and anime are separate canon but basic rules like what Pokemon are/aren't one of a kind apply).

The games have multiple of some legendaries/mythics as well since many of the legends are available in multiple regions and many NPCs have their own legendaries on their team.

My headcannon is that there are 4-5 "tiers" of legendary.

4: Common legendaries. There are many of these guys, often one set or more per region. The lesser trios and odd standalones are here. Examples include the Legendary Birds, gerbils, regis, Lati@s, Heatran, ect. Every large volcano has a Heatran at its heart, for instance.

3: Rare legendaries. not every region has all the Rare legendaries, most only have a few. These include the likes of Lugia, Ho-Oh, Mewtwo, Cressilia, and Darkrai.

2: Avatars. These legendaries are one-of-a-kind, but are capable of splitting of fragments of their being across the world. These are the ones with god-like powers, and also stands to explain the vast difference between their lore-power, and battle power. Regigigas, Palkia, Dialga, Groudon, Kyogre, The Tao Trio, ect are in this category.

2/3: Overlegendaries. A point here, currently exclusive to Rayquaza, but I'm considering moving Regigigas, and the rest of the Weather Trio here. This category is poorly defined for now, but I'll do my best. Basically, there are greater and lesser members of the species. There are multiple Rayquaza, for example, but there really is only one "Rayquaza of legend" that saved the earth all those years ago.

1: Unique. This grouping is basically exclusive to Arceus and Zygarde. There is only one in the world, but their powers either allow the violation of one place at a time in the case of Arceus, or being a collective hive mind with a potentially unlimited number of viable parts.

While many Pokémon are extremely powerful, I wouldn't rule out multiples of anything. Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza may only have jurisdiction over relatively small areas, as Oras's events only affect the horn region and not the world. Same goes for Diamond and Pearl. The corruption of mt. Coronet only covers the sinnoh region in shadow. These pokemon could be one of a small species of highly powerful Pokémon that are rare and so far in between in order to keep nature balanced. Zygarde ' s pokedex entry and website blurbs support this, stating that one individual takes watch over Kalos while another is scattered over Alola. It is highly improbable that this the same Pokémon. Lugia and Ho-Oh could be highly powerful bird pokemon that can claim a whole region as their territory, while other members of its species live off on remote islands or regions of their own. Perhaps regional jurisdiction is determined based on the areas history, pokemon population, and most importantly the influence of these highly powerful pokemon. Johto sought protection from Ho-oh, while Kanto was built under the watch of three powerful but lesser bird Pokémon.

Most of all, Arceus, as well as Palkia, Giratina, and Dialga, may be extremely elusive pokemon, due to it being multidimensional and usually existing in unseeable realms. Giratina ' s Distortion world is a copy of the Pokémon world to exact scale, in order to keep balance, as explained in the 12th movie. Giratina would need to be populous in order to keep watch and/or exist in more than one point in time space, as oras suggests. Same goes for the other two. Arceus has had a voice in movie 13, but was more animalistic in the hoopa movie, which may suggest multiplicity. Also, the fact that many of the same plates exist in multiple regions with even a couple duplicates existing in the same game suggests that there are multiple users of these plates, similar to Zygarde. Why do so many people assume that there can only be one/two Mewtwo? It's been many years since the events of Red & Blue, if the blueprints/research data of Metwo exist scientists can easily make more. We already know there are at least two in-game.

I mean there are companies in the Pokemon world pumping out Porygons and Castforms, I'd assume there would be many companies that would want to replicate the power of pokemon like Mewtwo or Magiarna. Just get the blueprints and 3D print 'em.

The Tao trio maybe the closest to a singularity, but their existence suggest that a more powerful dragon exists and can split at will.
This dragon probably follows the same rules as previously named legends, but because it was so powerful, it had to spread even farther out or be far more scarce than other legends, which is why it is still undiscovered. This Dragon may exist in less than ten instances, but can split apart when it's home becomes divided, only returning to its original form when truth and ideals come to terms.

Mewtwo as well as mew can be synthesized easily at this point and has been shown off in countless mediums.
There are baby mewtwos running around in the anime.

The most rare of all pokemon would have to lie in the mythical pokemon, but in only a few.
Because Celebi can time travel and create instances of itself in the same point in time, this can immediately be seen as a near infinite number of Celebi branching off from a single individual.

Shaymin is simply good at hiding for some reason and has been shown to exist in large gardens and flocks.

Manaphy is known to reproduce both phione and itself through unknown means.

Victini is at least plural when you consider both anime and vg universes, in which one is bound to a city in the movie and one is in hiding in a bunker in Poké New York. (I'm strongly convinced that this "Victory" pokemon is the literal Manhattan Project and was placed there in a nuclear fallout shelter on a remote island to wait out the war. Good going Gamefreak.)

Volcanion individuals have been sighted of several regions

Diancie is a clear natural mutation, which leaves Jirachi, Deoxys, and Hoopa.

Jirachi has never been seen in plural as far as I know, and is only awake for a week every 1000 years in the anime. I can see this one being singular.

Hoopa is so obscure and new, it hasn't been seen plural either, but it wouldn't be reality breaking if it was. It also was shown to duplicate it's body in the movie.

Deoxys was a one-off mystery, who's only proof of duplicity is in its methods of obtaining between RSE and ORAS.
It still could be a solid singularity

Tl; dr, the only ones who can't be directly interpreted as plural are Jirachi, Deoxys, and Hoopa, the latter is possibly plural but has no proof towards it, so yeah.

At one point, Deoxys may have been unique, but a virus spreads. In fact, viruses kind of make it their singular point to replicate as fast as possible. I think it's safe to say Deoxys stopped being unique the first time it had three seconds to relax, and infect some plant matter or something.

I highly doubt those were the only records. Even in a paper society, copying everything a few times is a routine practice. Besides what was at the Burned Mansion, it is likely that Dr. Fuji, along with most of the other top scientists, as well as whoever backed the project (Giovanni?) would have copies of those records. I wouldn't be surprised if even people as far removed as Professer Oak wound up with partial records.

Further, it is quite possibly that the Burned Mansion wasn't even the only site. Once the basic research is done, our backer could have, and indeed, if this was important enough, would have set up a number of facilities in the event that something went wrong at one of them.

Going by the game and manga the box legendaries are one of a kind, the only thing saying otherwise are non canon post game appearances that already go against established lore. For example the weather trio's appearance in HGSS and they fact that their orbs weren't with the protagonist of RSE or at Mt. Pyre.
The anime is a completely different story because it plays by it's own rules and lore when advertisments for a certain pokemon are needed.

Multiversity aside, the games couldn't spell it out any more obviously that most legendaries are unique. Things such as shinies and legendaries appearing in different regions are clearly a case of story and gameplay segregation, as in, it's a game, where you're supposed to collect as many Pokémon as possible. It wouldn't work if the game told you "Sorry, some kid already captured Mewtwo in 1996. He was unique, you're out of luck."

Except he doesn't, that encounter can't possibly happen given that one, it occurs during the XY era yet according to Steven it would occur prior to ORAS which is set before X and Y. Two, the trio had yet to be awakened at that point in over 1000 years.

Not to mention it was only accessible through an event pokemon.
It was just a reference that doesn't adhere to the games, in other words it's non canon to the games and crossing canons like that is generally an idiotic thing to do.

DCEU Batman and Nolan Batman overlap in many ways, incluiding the existence of a Batman, a Joker and a Robin (sort of).

The meteorites that make up iron island and deoxys' metorites in Diamond and Pearl are referenced in movie 13 as well as an episode where several Steel types in the island are disturbed.
They follow similar timelines, but with many differences.
The origins of both worlds is almost identical, which is what counts when decerning the ability for a species to remain in more than one number.

Of course they're going to have similar origins and what not but what you have to remember is that the anime creators have creative liberties which is why there are huge glaring differences like baby lugia.

You can't cross the canons unless the history of the areas matches up perfectly, what ever happened in the anime that isn't within the games isn't canon to the games. Understand?

And on that note Alain's adventure with Steven also isn't canon due to timeline placement.

Yes he does. In Omega Ruby. After Groudon is released. Also, your quotes do not state/imply that it is unique. It's simply just talking about that specific Groudon. Much like other normal Pokemon are commonly talked about as if they were unique but only because they are talking about that specific individual.

Also seeing as how both shiny and non-shiny versions of legendaries are seen in the anime, it solidifies the case that there can be multiples of each legendary (excluding CT & Arceus).

There is no legend on Kyogre/Groudon/Rayquaza's creation. Even if there were, it could've followed the rules of the Legendary Dogs where one original trio was created and went on to create offspring. (Ho-Oh created the Legendary Dogs and Entei's Pokedex entry states that it can reproduce.)

If the games are the original source, the the anime's history will match up almost perfectly to the original source material, which would mean Alain meeting Steven in their adventure is canon in the games and just elaborated in the anime, because the game reference it and are the original source by your claim.
Just because a baby Lugia hasn't been seen in the game universe, doesn't mean it isn't canon to the games or is impossible. If that episode was a special or extremely popular, it would have made it to the games in the same way the Manaphy egg did.
Personally I think both universes are just different interpretations of a single idea.

That is literally an impossibility anon.

For one the anime timeline is Kanto > Johto > Hoenn > Sinnoh > Unova > Kalos
While the games is
Kanto/Hoenn > Johto/Sinnoh > Unova > Unova 2 > Kalos

The mega evolution special occurs during the Kalos era of the anime, which would set it after Hoenn in both canons.
Steven implies it happens prior to the events in the Hoenn region.
See the contradiction here?
How can an event in the future happen in the past? And yes ORAS occurs in the past because 1) The Royal Unova wasn't made yet and 2) Mr.Bonding was created in ORAS while he was already an entity in X and Y.

This comparison is one of the few that proves that it's non canon.

Just take a look at the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime halfway through it goes on it's own route separate from the anime. This is part of the whole "creative liberties" thing I mentioned before.

Just because you can't breed legendaries doesn't mean (lore wise) it can't/doesn't happen. Latios/Latias are implied to breed yet you can't breed them. Entei is even said to reproduce, yet you can't breed it. You're only thinking as far as the end of your nose.

The Lake Trio are unique. The ones in BW2 show up in the cave which is supposed to lead to Sinnoh (though you can't go there gameplay wise), and the ones in ORAS are just the same ones from Sinnoh, only pulled to Hoenn by Hoopa.

Also, they aren't used by any NPCs.

With the way that would work in a timeline of games I guess they could get away with putting him in nearly anything, so yeah Zygarde wasn't the best example of what I was saying. Still though my point was that the thread is a bit silly because it sure seemed like the original idea was to have them be one of a kind. Not really, the fact that it doesn't adhere is grounds for exclusion. You should only really include the stuff that makes sense especially when it comes to HGSS and BW2. ORAS is a little more justifiable because they're supposedly being ripped out of different universes by Hoopa.

The Latiae are just very rare. The one Latiae that roams around Hoenn just migrated there from Southern Island or somewhere else. Similarly, Mew is endemic to Guyana/Faraway island.

I believe this may be the same case for other legendaries.

Depends on game or anime. In the game its usually stated that they're one of a kind with some exceptions. In the anime most are just really rare with some exceptions.

I feel like this is obvious. It varies between pokemon. Deoxys is an alien, which is why it's super rare, but most likely not the only one. Arceus is god, so probably only one. It says many times mew was a race, so there were lots at one point in time. In HGSS you can use arceus to create more box legends. Lugia had a baby in the animu. Etc Etc Etc.

I'd say given the use of legends by npcs (frontier brains entei, regis, articuno; benga latias) certain legends (most lesser legends) are simply rare and not one of a kind. Arceus and box legends are probably all one of a kind, with the exception of the hgss event.

The explanation for shiny legends is that each game exists in its own universe, so a shiny legend if atill the only legend of its kind in that universe.

Anime canon doesnt mean games canon, otherwise lugias could breed

I remember Manaphy was said to breed but would produce Phione in warmer water than the cold water where it naturally lived. I wonder if that meant it could breed into Manaphy in cold enough water. I think that some Legends are just old or endangered, for example for the former, Groudon, the latter, Mew.

As for how rare some of them are, I like to think that a lot of the "greater" legendaries such as box legendaries may only have 2-3 members of its kind in existence because they're so powerful.

Lesser legendaries such as the birds, beasts, Latixs, Shaymin, Heatran, etc. are extremely rare with multiple existing in the world.

If one member of the creation trio dies, Arceus CAN create another, but these guys are largely unique unless we're talking about different timelines. I like to think there's one Dialga/Palkia/Giratina in each timeline, controlling and maintaining their own version of the universe in their timeline. In fact, there may even be one Arceus per timeline.
