Japanese doujinshi always use the word マスター when giving Pokemon speech to refer to their trainers.

I'm not quite sure if the official manga or other Japanese media use that denomination officially.

I'm pretty sure that's because the trainer is the teacher, but sensei can't be used because the trainers are typically young. マスター, or 'master', is the best honorific word to use as a replacement.

That's it. "Master" has not the same connotation in Japan than in the West.
There they use it as a leader, or someone who teaches or leads, unlike the "underling" meaning it has in the West.
