Personally it's close between Barry and Cheren. I think I picked Cheren in the end because he is pretty much me during tutorials and battles. Also just becoming a gym leader and still being active in the story is cool

He's an antagonist rather than a rival. Rivals typically have the same goal as the protagonist, just trying to do it a different way. N's goals are way way different.
