>>27024193I don't have the image I usually post explaining this in detail on this computer, so I'll summarize it:
1. Odd-numbered Gens have a larger number of new Pokemon.
2. Lots of people, not just /vp/, were disappointed with only 70 new pokedex entries, including children. (COUNTERPOINT: Jap devs either don't give a flying fuck about the opinions of their fans or are completely oblivious to them, game freak included) I THINK game freak knows this, because of Masuda's cheeky-ass comment about there being "more than 10" new pokemon in sun and moon. A massive amount of new pokemon would make up for the disappointment of only 70 new pokemon.
3. 279+ would have the national dex break 1,000 pokemon. That'd be a HUGE selling/advertising point, as the people who complain about there being "too many" pokemon are the normie casual American trash who haven't played since gen 1 and probably don't plan on playing a video game ever again. (COUNTERPOINT: At this point, we're so close to release that I think them using 1,000 pokemon as an advertising/selling point is far less likely. I think they'd announce that a long time ago if they were planning on doing that.)
4. The likely reasons for them only making 70 new pokemon in gen 6 is because they had to model and animate every single pokemon and create the concept of megas from scratch. The models they used are not the ones from the iOS Pokedex thing. However, it looks like they're reusing all the models from the old game.
Modeling and animating 721 pokemon plus megas from scratch is a LOT of work over 3 years while making B2W2 and making an entirely 3D game. In comparison, modeling and animating ~279 new pokemon (plus megas isn't even confirmed because they haven't announced a single new mega) in 3 years is nothing, especially considering they either cancelled or were never making a Z game.
