1) showing a Gym leader become champion shows progression in the world making it feel like a sequel

2) You never have and probably never will get another chance to have a champion younger than the protag. It adds variety to the pool of champions.

3) It cashes in on her story with Dryden and actually lends credit to her having huge potential.
