I think each gen had weak designs and great designs. I think to say that liking or not liking a generation means you're not a fan is a falsehood. I think a real fan would appreciate something from each gen.
I started with Gen 1, Yellow Version. It was fun, I beat it. I got Gold Version when it came out, and it was way better, in my opinion.
Currently my favorites are 2-4, but I gave Pokémon I like in every generation.
tl;dr: variety is the spice of life, only faggots who don't actually like Pokémon claims that one gen is the only good one.
