In not simple terms, the metagame is using outside resources to determine what you do inside a game. This applies to any competitive gaming scene by knowing whats commonly used and therefore making decisions on that fact. In Pokemon, the meta is what type of teams and what mons are commonly used together on. For example, in today's meta Charizard-y could be popular, so people run stealth rock to try and counter it. Tomorrow Charizard-y could be no where so people would stop using stealth rock to counter it.
